Abstract

Amid accumulated tensions between the Catholic Church and the Mexican state, the Spanish Civil War placed the Mexican clergy at a crossroads. This article presents the positions expressed in Christus, a magazine serving the Mexican episcopate, regarding the peninsular conflict. A clear sympathy for the civil and military rebellion was evident from the beginning. Additionally, this paper aims to reflect the motives behind this stance and the reasons for changes in its position between 1936 and 1939. The vision projected by Christus regarding the struggle in Spain suggests that, as the years went by, the militant Catholic discourse had to be contained to some degree, perhaps to avoid compromising the reconciliation of the ecclesiastical hierarchy with General Lázaro Cárdenas’s government.
