Abstract

This article addresses literary criticism and conservative thought in 19th century Mexico, focusing its analysis on the literary criticism of José María Roa Bárcena. It discusses the relationship between conservatives, Catholicism, and literature, as well as criticism of contemporary compared to classical works, a theme that Roa Bárcena shared with other critics associated with different ideologies. The conservative sensibility in 19th century cultural production, the critique of French romance novels, and the view of liberalism as a disease are also topics highlighted in this paper. Additionally, Roa Bárcena's proposal to adapt old texts to the modern sensibilities without losing their moral message is emphasized, advocating for a measured and necessary change in Mexican literature.
