Abstract

José María de Ágreda y Sánchez (1838-1916) was one of the most important Mexican bibliophiles, librarians, and paleographers. His vast knowledge of ancient books led him to hold various public positions in emblematic libraries of Mexico City, such as the old Biblioteca Turriana, the Biblioteca del Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Historia y Etnología, and the Biblioteca Nacional, where he collaborated for more than two decades. Considered a man of wisdom by his intellectual contemporaries, he lived his life surrounded by books, stories, anecdotes, and libraries. For this reason, the next few lines aspire to recover the renowned figure of this Mexican antiquarian and historian.
