Abstract

This paper has three main objectives: 1) To outline a theoretical reflection on “Exile Literature” as a genre, distinguishing its definitions, conceptual features, and main typologies. 2) To portray Mexican writer Victoriano Salado Álvarez as an “exile author”, paradoxically bound to strong notions of nationality. 3) To describe Salado’s exile experience in Central America during the Mexican Revolution, while showing his legacy in the culture, customs, and especially the political history of the region. These characteristics lead us to consider Victoriano Salado Álvarez as a notable Central Americanist, a fascinating yet under-studied figure, not only in his vast work but in the history of Mexican literature.
