Este artículo, el primero de dos partes, examina los manuscritos del tratado náutico del siglo XVI de Agostino Cesareo, L'arte del navigare con il regimento della tramontana, que se publicará por separado. A partir del análisis del manuscrito Princeton MS Kane 54 —que, pese a la pérdida de los dos primeros folios, confirma su autoría— se estudia su relación con otros tratados tempranos de navegación, su contenido y las volvelas (tablas en círculos concéntricos, giratorios y de papel). El examen de las dedicatorias muestra que Cesareo produjo numerosos manuscritos autógrafos de presentación, ofrecidos a nobles en Italia y en el extranjero, con el fin de obtener un mecenas que financiara la impresión. Estos ejemplares revelan redes literarias y el deseo de pasar del manuscrito a la imprenta en la Italia del siglo XVI. La segunda entrega de este trabajo proporciona una bibliografía comentada sobre los manuscritos del tratado de navegación de Cesareo.
